Religion is not mere belief or belonging to a religion but realization and experience of God

The problem: An important fact of note is that all Religions claim that they are based upon actual experience of the Founder of their respective Religions. The truths they teach are the results of the experiences of a single particular Founder. The Founders all experienced, ‘saw’ God; they all saw their own souls, they saw the eternity, they saw their future, and what they saw they preached.

Modern Religions believe in a God up there; and think and claim that it was only possible for their Founders to experience the reality of God and that these experiences are impossible at the present day and that no one else can experience the truth for themselves! And therefore, we have now to take religion on belief on what is stated by their preachers. Only the preachers can teach and mere ‘belief’ and ‘belonging’ to a religion is enough; being ethical and virtuous while following some other religion, is not enough!

Religion is Realization; not mere belonging to this or that Religion: Our ancient Rishis assert and declare that no man can be religious until he has himself realized the highest truth. The fruit of religions and its practice is to ourselves have the direct realization, and the same perceptions, experiences that the Founders had. Mere belonging or believing in this or that God, or ideology, or religion is just a beginning!

We can enjoy the fruit of our religion only by ourselves sincerely following the self-development practices of prayers, meditations, worship, etc. that are an integral part of each religion.

Uniformity, cosmic harmony is the rigorous law of nature; what once happened can happen always; that God can be realized, actually experienced, has been affirmed by countless Rishis, Seers as expressed in the Vedas. That the infinite truth can be experienced and expressed only once by just one Founder, can be totally rejected considering a basic scientific principle, that if there has been one case of experience in this world in any particular branch of knowledge, it absolutely follows that this experience has been possible millions of times before, and will be repeated eternally.

It is useless to talk about religion until one has felt it; what right has a man to say he has a soul if he does not feel it, or that there is a God if he does not see Him? If there is a God, we must see Him, if there is a soul, we must perceive it; otherwise, it is better not to believe. It is better to be an outspoken atheist than a hypocrite.

Man wants truth, wants to experience truth for himself, to grasp it, to realize it, to feel it within his heart of hearts; then alone, declare the Rishis, will all doubts vanish, all darkness be scattered, and all crookedness be made straight.

Realizing and experiencing ourselves as infinite spirit, infinite Consciousness, is the essence of religions, shorn of all mythology, ideology, beliefs. Yoga and religion are the science of realizing this, the highest Truth of all truths. Yoga teaches us those self-development practices for refining and managing our mind, our thoughts, and directing them towards the higher, spiritual dimensions that will give us the ability to experience the truth of our spiritual nature for ourselves.

The Rishis declare, “Ye children of Gods, the way has been found; there is a way out of all this darkness and that way is of daily self-development practices of our respective religions; to direct our mind and thoughts towards God, the highest Truth, and only by perceiving Him Who is beyond all darkness, shall we have poorna-ananda, total-bliss-fulfilment; there is no other way.”

Every science must have its own method of investigation and continuous practice to train and refine the mind is the method of religions. The science of Religions, of Yoga (Karma-yoga, Bhakti-yoga, Gyan-yoga, Raja-yoga, i.e., meditation) puts before us a practical and scientifically worked‑out method of Self-development practices for reaching this highest Truth of all truths.

Why is there so much quarrelling in the name of God, so much fighting, hatred, killing? We know that modern religions led by narrow minded preachers and blind-followers have caused more bloodshed in the name of God than for any other cause. And the reason is that they have never actually experienced what the Founders of religions had experienced. They were content only to give a mental assent to the customs and rituals of worship without really experiencing love and empathy for all equally; and so they simply forced others to do the same, without love.

Religion is Realization as a working hypothesis? In spite of all our religions, temples, churches, places of worship on one hand and education and science on the on the hand somehow we’ve not only failed to explore beyond matter but refuse to accept, even as a working hypothesis, the scientific statements of those who have actually experienced and realized, that behind this world of matter and behind every living being, is the same infinite, blissful, unitary, ‘Consciousness’, aka ‘life; spirit; atman; rooha’; that is the unchanging reality of this ever-changing universe.

And that it is the purpose of ‘religion’ and ‘yoga’ to show us the path of ethical, virtuous, righteous conduct, commitment to duties, etc. thru’ which we can once again ‘regain’ and ‘reunite’ respectively, with the whole!
