Thanks to the encouragement given to it by so many people the pandemic keeps resurging

Overheard, a conversation between two coronaviruses.

1st virus: Now we’re being accused of coming back in a second wave, nastier and meaner than ever before. It’s just not fair!

2nd virus: That it isn’t. Because the so-called second wave has less to do with us and more to do with people themselves.

1st virus: Right. We’ve been hanging around, minding our own business like we’ve been doing all along, and you’d think in all that time people would have learnt how to make sure they don’t come into contact with us, and give us no choice but to infect them.

2nd virus: Yeah. Like by making sure they wear masks, and don’t go into crowded places, and simple stuff like that.

1st virus: Yup. Instead of which, soon after the first lockdown during which we had nothing to do but sit idle and twiddle our thumbs because we couldn’t find anyone to infect, they’ve started coming out in droves, all maskless and socially undistanced, so that we have to work overtime infecting all and sundry.

2nd virus: And as if that isn’t enough, there are all these elections taking place in Bengal and elsewhere, with everyone going around doing lecture-baazi to each other and not a mask, or social distance, in sight.  And don’t forget the Kumbh Mela, which is ditto for masks and social distancing, and us viruses are made to work harder than ever. We ought to form a union and demand shorter working hours!

1st virus: Well, in all fairness Delhi and some other places have declared night curfews, so we do get some time off.

2nd virus: Night curfews? Big deal. We’re not vampires that we become operative only at night. We’re only viruses and don’t know the difference between night and day. In fact, we don’t know anything, except infecting living beings like people.

1st virus: You’re right. We’re not really living critters ourselves, and are incapable of thinking, or of having this imaginary conversation.

2nd virus: So we can’t consciously cook up a strategy of making waves, first, second, third or fourth. It’s people who make waves.

1st virus: I wish they’d make one more wave and wave us goodbye …
